COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College will host the 2010
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's soccer championships from November 5-7, 2010, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Eric Danner announced today. The Skyhawks lead the RMAC with a 9-1-1 conference record.
The RMAC is in the second year of a pilot program in which the host of the conference championship in women's soccer is named two to three weeks in advance. The idea is to help participating schools plan for travel while allowing the host some time to get ready for the tournament.
This marks the first time that Fort Lewis College will have hosted the RMAC women's soccer championships. The Skyhawks have hosted first round games in the past, but not the semifinals and championship.
“I think it's huge for the seniors,” said fourth-year FLC head coach
Damian Clarke. “The seniors have put in a lot of hard work to make us a strong program. It's nice for them to be able to bring it home and play in front of our home crowd.”
The other teams to compete in the RMAC women's soccer championship are yet to be determined. The final two weeks of regular season play will decide the final seeding for the playoffs. The top six teams in the RMAC regular season standings qualify.
On Wednesday, Nov. 3, the No. 5 seed plays at the No. 4 seed, while the No. 6 seed plays at the No. 3 seed.
On Friday, Nov. 5, the winner of the 4/5 game plays the top seed at Dirks Field in Durango, while the winner of the 3/6 game plays the second seed at Dirks Field.
The championship will be played on Sunday, Nov. 7 at Dirks Field.
Times for all of the playoff games are to be determined.
With two weeks remaining in the RMAC regular season, the Skyhawks find themselves alone at the top, but with Regis breathing down their necks. Fort Lewis has 28 points and a 9-1-1 record (three points are awarded for a win, one for a tie), while Regis has 27 points and a 9-2-0 slate in league play.
Fort Lewis travels to Adams State (4-9-1, 3-6-1) at 3 p.m. Friday and New Mexico Highlands (9-4-2, 7-2-2) at 1 p.m. Sunday. FLC concludes its regular season on Sunday, October 31 when it hosts Regis (12-4-0, 9-2-0) at 1 p.m. at Dirks Field in what could ultimately determine the RMAC regular season champion.
