November 6, 2009. Durango, CO – The #13 Fort Lewis Women’s soccer team found themselves heading into the RMAC Tournament Championship game after beating #22 Colorado School of Mines earlier this afternoon at Auraria Field at Metro State in the semifinals.
Hayley Hollenga recorded her second goal of the tournament just five minutes into the game giving the Skyhawks an early lead. Hollenga was able to slip the ball past the Orediggers goalkeeper far post of the goal.
The Orediggers evened up the score in the 19th minute when Jessica Stark’s header off of a corner kick snuck by Fort Lewis goalkeeper Christine Schmelzle. The Orediggers found themselves in the lead when Stark scored her second goal of the match in the 37th minute.
Fort Lewis came out in the second half fired up and able to tie the game in the 54th minute on a goal from senior Jamie MacArthur. Hollenga scored yet again and eventually the game winner with six minutes remaining in the game.
The Skyhawks were able to hang on the lead winning in a close 3-2. FLC only recorded one more shot then CSM 15-14 as Schmelzle was forced to make one more save then the Orediggers keeper 9-8. MacArthur led the ‘Hawks with 5 shots while Hollenga took 3 shots of her own.
#13 Fort Lewis will be taking on #4 Metro State in the championship game Sunday afternoon at noon after Metro defeated Regis 5-1 in the semifinal game today. Metro State is the only team Fort Lewis has lost to this season.
