Steve Berglund, who graduated from Fort Lewis College in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at goalkeeper in men’s soccer from 1997-2000 and a one-year letterwinner and starter as a kicker and punter in football in 2001. He led the Skyhawks on an improbable run to the 1999 NCAA Division II national championship game, where they lost 2-1 to Southern Connecticut State in double overtime. During his career, Berglund was a first team NSCAA All-American (1999), was named to the NCAA Division II All-Final Four Team (1999), and earned a bevy of other accolades, including first team NSCAA All-Midwest Region (1999), second team NSCAA All-Midwest Region (2000), first team All-RMAC (1999), and second team All-RMAC (1998). He was also chosen as his team’s Most Valuable Player in 1999.

Berglund owns FLC single-season records for shutouts (13, 1999) and most games in goal (24, 1999). He also is part of a duo that holds the school record for fastest consecutive goals scored by one team (20 seconds apart, vs. Colorado Mines, Oct. 11, 1999). Moments after teammate Josh Veryser scored against the Orediggers, Berglund punted the ball the length of the field and saw it bounce over the opposing goalkeeper’s head into the netting.

“Steve was the guy who could make you laugh in the locker room and make you shake your head on the soccer field,” said teammate Luc Cisna, who was inducted into the FLC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. “If we would have won that last game, he would have been the national player of the year … and he probably should have gotten it anyway.”

Berglund becomes the fourth member of the 1999 men's soccer team to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as an individual, joining Cisna, Calum Robertson, and Brad Greenwood. The entire '99 squad was inducted in 2010, becoming just the fifth team in school history to enter the Hall of Fame.

Shortly after graduating from Fort Lewis, Berglund began working for the youth correctional facility Rite of Passage in the Denver area. His duties have included counselor, case manager, group leader, transition specialist and coach (soccer, rugby, lacrosse). He works with a group of 24 youths to learn new skills and make better life choices, ultimately helping them to transition back into the community and continue their education.

He is currently pursuing a special education teaching licensure through the Teacher Institute of Law Academia (TILA) and is taking his courses at the University of Colorado-Denver.

Hemarried Melissa Pendleton Berglund, who is also a 2002 graduate of Fort Lewis College, in 2003. The couple has two young daughters, Virginia (born in 2006), and Loralei (born in 2009), and a dog Shadow. The Berglunds reside in Aurora.
