Assistant Football Coach/Linebackers Mark Meng

Mark Meng

One of the most storied football players in Fort Lewis College history, Mark Meng returned to his alma mater in the winter of 2010 to complete his bachelor’s degree (expected to be finished in 2011) and coach the Skyhawk linebackers. He also serves as film coordinator. He begins his second season on the job in 2011.

As a member of the Skyhawk coaching staff, his recruiting areas include Southwest Colorado, California, and Hawaii.

He comes to the Skyhawk program after coaching at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead, Calif. While at Rim of the World, Meng coached running backs, linebackers and defensive ends. The Fighting Scots finished with a 10-2 overall record and CIF playoff berth. Six of Meng's players received first team All-Mojave League honors, including Dillon Prestzinger, who was voted the league's Most Valuable Player.

Meng played linebacker and punter for the Skyhawks in 2007 and '08. In 2007, he ranked second in the nation in total tackles with 120. He was named first team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and first team All-Colorado.

During his senior season, Meng led the nation in total tackles with 138, while being named first team All-America, preseason All-America, RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, first team All-RMAC, and first team All-Colorado. He also played in the NCAA Division II all-star game, the Valero Cactus Bowl, in Kingsville, Texas.

In July 2011, Skyhawk football fans voted Meng the greatest player in school history. Amassing 26 percent of the vote (his nearest competitor, two-time All-America wide receiver Johnny Cox, had just 14 percent), Meng secured his spot on Fort Lewis College’s All-Century Team. This squad features 100 of the top student-athletes, coaches, and administrators in Fort Lewis’ 100-year history as a high school, junior college, and four-year college. Fans chose one player each from football, volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball. The other 94 people were chosen by the FLC Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee. The 2011 Hall of Fame induction ceremony and All-Century Team celebration will take place at 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2011, in the Student Union Ballroom.
